I have been involved in Scouting for over 30 years, beginning in 1992 as an Assistant Cub Scout Leader in Chelmsford. In 1997, I moved to 1st Weeley/Lt Clacton, where I later volunteered with Beavers and Scouts before taking on the role of District Lead Volunteer in 2023.
As the District Lead Volunteer, I hold the overall responsibility for the effective and safe operation of the District. I also focus on leading and inspiring our volunteers to deliver outstanding experiences to give young people skills for life.
While I have had many memorable experiences in Scouting over the years, my most cherished memory is being invited to see six of my former Scouts in the Queen’s Scout Awards parade 2016 at Windsor Castle.
I have been in Scouting for many years, like many Leaders I was recruited shortly after my children started in Beaver Scouts. I became an Assistant Beaver Leader and quickly achieved my Wood Badge (the first of many). After a few years I became a Cub Leader followed by a Beaver Leader, then joined the District team as the Assistant District Commissioner for the Beaver Scouts across Tendring. This was a really rewarding role, organising District events, supporting Leaders who wanted to achieve their Wood Badges, visiting and meeting all the Beavers for 6 years.
One of my most rewarding roles was that I set up a Cub section at Shorefields School in Clacton, this is the local school for children with Special Educational needs.
I first started in Scouting as a Cub Scout and Scout in what was then the 9th Clacton Scout Group. I went on to what was then Senior Scouts where I became a Queen Scout and gained the Gold D of E. When I was 18, I became a leader and eventually Scout Leader and Group Scout Leader of the Weeley and Lt Clacton group where I have been a leader for 50+ years.
I was Assistant County Commissioner for Essex for Activities for 7 years and started and led the County Caving Team, Mountaineering and Parascending Teams. I also started the Essex communications team and provided communication and logistical support for many of the London Royal events with a large team of young scouters. I was later the Tendring District Commissioner for 13 years.
My greatest challenge was organising the Essex International Jamboree in 1996 on a farm in Kirby-Le-Soken and setting up the site for 2 more successive Jamborees.
My current role in the District is Support Team Lead to provide assistance as required and support all leaders in their scouting roles.
My most enjoyable post in scouting is running a scout group, the direct involvement with the young people and trying to give the young people all of the opportunities I have been so
lucky to have had.
Kallum Szabo is the 14 – 24 Team Lead for Tendring District Scouts, supporting the development and delivery of opportunities for Explorer Scouts and Network members. He has been an adult volunteer since 2018, having previously progressed through the Scout sections himself, giving him a strong understanding of the young person’s journey. Kallum is also a District Trustee and an active member of the Enigma Explorer Scout Unit leadership team. He is passionate about helping young people continue their Scouting journey and develop skills for life beyond the younger sections.
I have been overseeing the governance of Tendring District Scouts for over 15 years. During this time, I have worked closely with fellow trustees and volunteers to ensure the District is well-managed and able to deliver high-quality Scouting. I am passionate about supporting the continued growth and development of Scouting across the area. It is a privilege to help create opportunities for young people to learn, develop, and thrive.
I have been involved in Scouting since 2017. I joined as a Beaver team member at 7th Clacton Scout Group as my son attended that group. After a while I became the Beaver Team Lead at 7th Clacton as well as the Group Lead Volunteer until 2025. My current role is Joint Team Lead 6-13 years. I mainly support the Beaver section but we work together to support all sections when needed. Within my role I am part of a team who support the District Lead Volunteer and ensure that Young People within Tendring District are accessing the best Scouting experiences available & gaining skills for life.
Michael Harris is the Joint 6 -13s Team Lead for Tendring District Scouts, supporting the delivery of engaging and high-quality programmes for younger sections across the District. He has been an adult volunteer since 2012 and brings a wealth of experience to the role. Alongside his District responsibilities, Michael also serves as Group Lead Volunteer for 3rd Thorpe-le-Soken Scout Group. He is committed to helping young people gain skills for life through fun, challenging, and rewarding Scouting experiences.
Currently, my roles for the district are Team Leader (Activities) – Includes Nights Away Assessor for campsites and light weight expeditions, Team Member in the Learning Team and Team Leader for Phoenix Explorer Scout Unit.
I started my Scouting life at the age of 12 joining 12th Clacton Scout Troop, then on to become a Venture Scout.
In 1981 I became an Assistant Venture Scout Leader with 12th Clacton. In 1985 I then became an Assistant Scout Leader, again with 12th Clacton. I then changed to become a Leader in the then new Explorer Scout Section in 2002 where I continue as a Team Leader.
I have many Scouting memories, one of my main memories was being part of a group of leaders and young people (around 40) that went to southern Poland for around 10 days where we refurbished and decorated a Polish Orphanage.
I have been an adult volunteer in Scouting in Tendring since 1981 starting as an Assistant Cub Scout Leader at 1st Kirby changing to 1st Holland-on-Sea in 1982. I remained in 1st Holland-on-Sea until 2004 changing to Scout Leader in 1989. When the Scout age range changed I became Explorer Scout Leader (Young Leaders) and set up the Young Leader Unit which I currently still lead. In 2014 I became District Explorer Scout Commissioner with an ex-officio role on the District Executive Committee for the next 4 years, following which I became a Trustee. My current role in the District Team is Learning Team Lead where I advise adult volunteers on options for learning beyond Growing Roots as part of the Volunteering Development Team. Alongside my volunteering career in Tendring I have been a national volunteer for Adult Training and held various Essex County roles including Trainer for First Aid and Wood Badge modules. I complemented this with many international adventures associated with young people in the 14 to 25 age group. However one of my favourite Scouting memories takes me back to being Scout Leader and of Brownsea Island on a warm summer night with only the leaders and scouts of 1st Holland-on-Sea for company enjoying the sound of the waves and the nodding donkey in Poole harbour.
I have over 20 years’ experience working with children whilst specialising in neurodisability, mental health, behaviour issues amongst other needs. I am currently an Additional Needs Advisor within schools in Tendring. Having three children myself with neurodisabilities, I have a wealth of knowledge both from my professional role and that of a mother.
In terms of Scouting, I have been involved in some way or another for over 15 years, supporting my husband’s Scouting endeavours at camps, section meetings and visits. I have volunteered as Group Secretary and as Beaver Scout Leader in Hertfordshire and, most recently, I have volunteered as a Helper with the Frinton and Kirby Scouts, where my youngest son is a member.
I can offer professional guidance to support children within groups to thrive and participate in all aspects of scouting life.
