International

At Tendring District Scouts, we believe every young person should have the opportunity to experience the world beyond their local community.

International Scouting offers life-changing experiences that develop confidence, independence, leadership and a broader understanding of the world. These opportunities are not holidays — they are structured programmes designed to challenge, inspire and empower young people.

What Are International Scouting Opportunities?

International expeditions are delivered through County, UK and World Scouting programmes. They bring together young people from across the globe through a combination of:

  • Adventure and outdoor challenge
  • Cultural exchange
  • Community service
  • Personal development

Participants take part in a structured journey over 18 – 24 months, including:

  • A competitive selection process
  • Training and preparation camps
  • Team-building and skills development
  • Fundraising and community engagement

Our 2027 International Expeditions

We are incredibly proud that young people and adult volunteers from Tendring have been selected to take part in a range of international opportunities in 2027. Each expedition offers a unique combination of adventure, challenge and cultural experience.

World Scout Jamboree – Poland 2027

The World Scout Jamboree is the largest international Scouting event, bringing together over 40,000 Scouts from more than 150 countries.

Participants will spend around two weeks living as part of an international sub-camp, sharing daily life with Scouts from across the world. The programme includes:

  • Large-scale adventure activities
  • Global development and sustainability projects
  • Cultural exchange and international evenings
  • Team challenges and collaborative activities

Participants will also take part in activities across Poland, offering the opportunity to explore the host country and its culture.

The Jamboree is designed to promote peace, friendship and global understanding, while helping young people develop independence, confidence and communication skills in a truly international environment.

North America Expedition – USA & Canada

This expedition combines a traditional camp experience with a wilderness adventure phase, offering both structured programme activities and genuine expedition challenge.

The journey includes:

  • Time in New York, experiencing a major international city
  • Participation in a Scouts America summer camp, with a wide range of activities
  • A wilderness expedition in the Adirondack Mountains, involving canoeing and hiking in remote environments
  • Visits to Niagara Falls and Toronto

During the wilderness phase, participants will:

  • Camp in remote locations
  • Cook their own meals
  • Carry and manage their own equipment
  • Navigate and travel as part of a team

This element of the expedition develops self-reliance, resilience, teamwork and problem-solving skills, as well as confidence in unfamiliar environments.

Kenya International Service Project

The Kenya expedition focuses on service, cultural immersion and global awareness.

Participants will:

  • Work alongside a partner school, supporting community-based projects
  • Engage with local communities and experience daily life in a different cultural context
  • Spend time in Nairobi, gaining insight into urban life
  • Visit the Maasai Mara, experiencing the natural environment and wildlife
  • Visit Nyeri, including the memorial of Lord Baden-Powell, founder of Scouting

This experience helps young people develop empathy, cultural understanding and a broader awareness of global issues, while contributing positively to the communities they visit.

A Shared Experience

Across all three expeditions, participants will:

  • Spend extended time away from home
  • Work closely as part of a team
  • Adapt to new environments and challenges
  • Take responsibility for themselves and others

These shared elements ensure that every participant gains meaningful personal development, regardless of which expedition they take part in.

Why It Matters

For many young people in Tendring opportunities to travel internationally can be limited.

These expeditions help to:

  • Broaden horizons and raise aspirations
  • Build confidence and independence
  • Develop leadership and teamwork skills
  • Encourage long-term volunteering and community involvement

Participants return with new perspectives, stronger life skills and the confidence to take on future challenges.

Developing Future Leaders

International experiences also play a key role in developing adult volunteers.

Leading and supporting expeditions of this scale requires:

  • Advanced planning and organisation
  • Risk management and safeguarding
  • Budget management and financial oversight
  • Team leadership and coordination
  • Communication with families, partners and international organisations

Adult volunteers develop the confidence and capability to lead in complex environments, manage teams effectively and support young people through challenge and change.

This experience strengthens the quality and sustainability of Scouting across Tendring, ensuring that local groups continue to benefit from skilled, confident leadership and ambitious programme delivery.

Fundraising and Community Support

Each participant is required to raise funds to cover the cost of their expedition, including travel, accommodation, training and programme delivery.

Our participants are actively involved in fundraising, including:

  • Community events and craft fairs
  • Tabletop sales and themed evenings
  • Seasonal events such as afternoon teas and BBQs
  • Sponsored challenges and district-wide initiatives

This is a key part of the journey, helping young people develop responsibility, commitment and community engagement.
